A month ago, I had the chance to participate as a speaker at SPC Advance 2017 in Pittsburgh. SPC is an event for sustainability professionals in packaging to come together to work on issues that matter most for moving sustainability forward.
It was an amazing experience where I saw industry and brands collaborating to improve the sustainability of their packaging and supply chains. It’s great to see such collaboration – as the proverb says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
My favorite speaker sessions were made by Laura Thompson (Paper packaging innovation), Eric Abraham (Luxury brands), and Ashley C. Hall (Project Gigaton). The team at SPC put in a lot of effort to make the event a success – plus the food was great.
The big themes at the conference were:
- The importance of partnerships for closed loop systems
- Developing markets for recycled materials
- Building the business case for sustainability
- Cold chain packaging
The title of my talk at the event was “Sustainable packaging for a post-foam era”. I covered the major trends (retailers’ sustainability goals, rise of ecommerce) driving demand alternatives for EPS foam alternatives in protective packaging.
I also shared Corruven’s framework for sustainable packaging which includes – sustainable sourcing, prevents damage, optimizes logistics, and is fun to unpack. I followed by showing how our team is innovating by using this framework to help our clients improve their sustainability and achieve cost savings.

I look forward to participate in next year’s event to see this group of leaders and share our progress!
That’s it for this post. Let me know your thoughts.
